Canyon High Student Named Junior Golfer of the Year

A junior from Canyon High School was named the 2019 Junior Golfer of the Year by the Southern Texas PGA (STPGA) last month.

The young rising golf star, Ty Roberts, will be presented with his honor during the STPGA’s 52nd Annual President’s Dinner and Awards Ceremony Feb. 10 at the Woodlands Country Club.

His coach at CHS, Jimmy Keresztury, is not surprised by this latest honor.

“Ty is an awesome golfer,” Keresztury said. “His greatest accomplishment so far is becoming the district champion last year as a sophomore and qualifying for the regional tournament. I have known him since he was a freshman on the CHS golf team, and I also had him as a student in my history class. Ty not only has tons of talent on the golf course but is an excellent student as well.”

The CHS golf team, including boys and girls, is made of 32 players this year. The high school golf season began Sept. 4 with practice and goes through the district tournament which is scheduled for March 30-31.

With a fairly young team, Keresztury looks to seasoned players like Ty to help develop the team.

“Besides being a good teammate, he has taken on a leadership role this year and is always willing to help out the younger players on the team.”

Congratulations, Ty!
