June 7, 2023 - This year, the graduating class of 2023 from Comal ISD’s five high school campuses received a total of $592,622 in local scholarships, surpassing the district’s goal for the year.
“We continue to be amazed by the generosity of the Comal ISD community which funds our local scholarships,” says Sarah Permenter, executive director of community relations for Comal ISD. “We value their partnership and commitment to working with us to support our students and families every year.”
Local scholarship donors were invited to celebrate their efforts during an appreciation breakfast today at the district’s Support Services office. This year, a total of 495 local scholarships were awarded to seniors across the district. These scholarships range in amounts from $50 to $16,000, with some focused on a specific area of study or with specific qualifiers.
The Wurstfest Association scholarship, for example, is a four-year $8,000 scholarship ($1,000 per semester for eight semesters). Qualified applicants may attend a college, university or trade school. This year, the Wurstfest Scholarship Committee awarded three one-year scholarships and one four-year scholarship to four Canyon High School students.
The Canyon Lake Republican Women awarded two $1,000 scholarships; and the Canyon Lake Rotary Club awarded three four-year $2,000 per semester scholarships to Canyon Lake High School students.
“I really want to thank the district for making it possible for us to provide these scholarships to students in our community,” says Jeanne Slupik who has served on the Canyon Lake Republican Women scholarship committee for more than 20 years. “It means a lot to us to be at the awards night and hand the recipients the certificate.”
Maureen Schein with the Canyon Lake Rotary Club agrees, also thanking the district for “giving us a great pool of applicants.” The Canyon Lake Rotary Club hosts an annual fund-raiser for its scholarships with a Valentine’s dinner and dance. Next year’s is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11, at the New Braunfels Civic Center.
This year, GVTC and the GVTC Foundation awarded $100,000 in scholarships to Comal ISD students which translates into 40 individual scholarships of $2,500 each.
“It is a privilege for us to award these scholarships to local students,” says Sonia Aguillon, president of the GVTC Foundation. “By enhancing our community and investing in our youth, our hope is that they will come back to our community and make it that much better.”
Other organizations and companies with scholarships include campus Parent and Teacher Associations (PTA), booster clubs, Kiwanis Clubs and Noon Lions Clubs just to name a few.
